La criatura

La criatura (The Creature) is a 1977 Spanish drama directed by Eloy de la Iglesia, starring Ana Belén and Juan Diego. The story centers on a respectable bourgeois housewife trapped in a dull, frustrating marriage, who ultimately prefers the devotion she shares with her black German Shepherd over her relationship with her husband. Its open treatment of zoophilia made it one of the earliest and most controversial films in Spanish cinema to address the subject.

Beyond its shocking premise, the film uses bestiality as a symbol of Spain's political climate during the transition to democracy. It alludes to the Atocha massacre and to the far-right groups that sought to preserve Franco's ideals after the dictator's death. Bizarre and deliberately provocative, the film stands as both a taboo-breaking drama and a political allegory of post-Franco Spain.
