Mocro Maffia

TV Series · 2018 · 15 people

Videoland, the streaming platform of RTL Nederland, premiered Mocro Maffia, a Dutch crime drama series, on 11 October 2018. Produced by RTL Productions and filmed in Dutch, the show ran for six seasons and 45 episodes, concluding in November 2024.

Created by Achmed Akkabi and Thijs Römer, the series adapts the book of the same name by journalists Wouter Laumans and Marijn Schrijver and draws on real events surrounding the organised drug-crime network known as the "Mocro Maffia" in the Netherlands and Belgium. Directing duties were shared by Bobby Boermans, Giancarlo Sanchez and Victor Ponten.

At its centre are three childhood friends — Romano, Potlood and De Paus — who leap from petty crime to seizing control of Amsterdam's cocaine trade in record time, until jealousy and betrayal turn their bond into a bloody war. The first season also follows a journalist investigating the wave of killings sweeping the Dutch capital as the cocaine conflict escalates.

In the Netherlands the series drew criticism for hewing closely to real cases at the expense of victims' families, yet audiences praised its acting, direction and writing. Internationally, it reached Germany via Joyn from November 2019 and France on Série Club from February 2021.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Six seasons and 45 episodes is a bold distance for a crime show. The real engine here is the childhood friendship between Romano, Potlood and De Paus; once jealousy and betrayal kick in, that bond gives the story enough tension to sustain a long run. Still, a show this long always risks letting its cycle of revenge repeat itself. An outside view like the journalist's thread in the first season is what lets the story breathe. A series that opens fast but asks for patience.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

A rise from petty crime to running Amsterdam's cocaine trade is the perfect launch pad for a hard-edged crime show. A gang war that raises the stakes as it grows puts everything the genre loves on the table. Don't let the Dutch dialogue put you off; if you're fine with subtitles, it does this kind of story justice. Just know going in that the violence is not light.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

What stands out most is how the show turns a real criminal network into drama, working from the book by journalists Wouter Laumans and Marijn Schrijver. That approach makes visible the spiral of violence the drug trade has pulled cities in the Netherlands and Belgium into. But the criticism it drew at home should not be brushed aside: sticking so closely to real cases can mean reopening unhealed wounds for victims' families. The balance between telling the criminals' friendship and rise as compelling drama and respecting the weight of real losses remains the show's most contested point.
