The Truce

Directed by Francesco Rosi and released in 1997, The Truce (La tregua) adapts Primo Levi's autobiographical account of the same name. The film follows Levi's journey back to Italy in 1945 after the Red Army liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp at the end of World War II. Crossing a devastated Europe, the survivor travels a long and winding route home, meeting fellow former prisoners along the way, in a voyage that becomes as much an inner recovery as a physical return.

Starring John Turturro, the production was a co-production between Italy, France and Germany, with filming taking place in Turin and Ukraine. It was screened in the official selection at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival and went on to win the David di Donatello awards for Best Film and Best Director. It was Rosi's final feature before his death in 2015. The screenplay was written by Rosi together with Stefano Rulli and Sandro Petraglia, based on a story treatment by Tonino Guerra.
