Tuncer Salman — Biography

Starting out as a stage performer, Turkish actor Tuncer Salman became familiar on screen in supporting roles. Wide audiences know him as Hakkı Dayı in Teşkilat and as Ragıp in Ateş Kuşları. He also works as a voice actor and continues to work at the Bursa State Theatre.

The first phase of his career was the theatre: after graduating from the Hacettepe University State Conservatory in 1990 he spent a year at the Ankara State Theatre and worked at the Antalya State Theatre from 1993 to 2001, moving to Bursa in 2002. In 1997 he founded OL Tiyatrosu with the Azerbaijani director Namık Agayev; the company's first production was Hoşgeldin Nazım, followed by Martı, adapted from Richard Bach's book. On stage he appeared in plays such as Hamlet, Danton'un Ölümü and Batakhane Güzeli. He began acting for the camera in the early 1990s; his first widely noticed screen work was Vizontele and Vizontele Tuuba, followed by Organize İşler and Hokkabaz, both with Cem Yılmaz.

From the mid-2000s television took over: Gelin, Beşik Kertmesi, Annem, Bitmeyen Şarkı, Kötü Yol, Kurtlar Vadisi Pusu, Dayan Yüreğim and Sultan of My Heart. In cinema he appeared in Kurtuluş Son Durak (2012), Ankara Yazı, Şuursuz Aşk and Kendi Yolumda.

Their work through different eyes

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Tuncer Salman's type is the familiar man of the neighbourhood or local authority: Hakkı Dayı in Teşkilat, the headman in Beşik Kertmesi, Halet Efendi in Kalbimin Sultanı. In my view what these parts share is that they are not the story's main axis but the voice of the community around it; viewers trust him as someone who sets the surroundings rather than someone who carries the plot.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

That Tuncer Salman plays the same Ahmet in both Vizontele and Vizontele Tuuba is a small sign that the writer built a world rather than a star vehicle. In ensemble comedies of this kind, as in Organize İşler, his share is in my view not a story of his own but the texture of the crowd. Dündar in Şuursuz Aşk sits outside that line, in a more closed and serious drama.
