Ali Çatalbas — Biography

Ali Çatalbaş is a stage actor associated with the Ortaoyuncular company and a one-man play he wrote himself; to a wider audience he is the Tayfun of the Kolpaçino films. His career moves between theatre, cinema and television, and he has kept his link with the stage.

After studying philosophy at Istanbul University he joined Nöbetçi Tiyatro in 1986. Two years later he turned professional at Ortaoyuncular with the play İstanbul'u Satıyorum, sharing the stage with masters such as Münir Özkul and Erol Günaydın. He took part in many of the company's productions and wrote and performed the one-man play Kötü Çocuk. Other stage work includes İşsizler Cennete Gider, Nasri Hoca ve Muhalif Eşeği and Masal Müfettişi. On screen he appeared from the late 1990s: from On Kadın and Bahtiyar Ölmez onward he was seen in series such as Varsayalım İsmail, Hayat A.Ş., Savcının Karısı, Kısmetim Otel and Başım Belada, and he acted in Akbank and Komili commercials.

In cinema he played Aydın in Pardon (2005) and Captain Hakan in Destere (2008). With Kolpaçino (2009) he created the character Tayfun and kept the role in Kolpaçino Bomba (2011) and Kolpaçino 3. Devre (2016); in Hep Yek 2 (2017) he played Manyak Kerim. Kolpaçino 4 4'lük, Dalavere and Sonradan Gurme also appear in his filmography.

Their work through different eyes

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Pardon is the film in Ali Çatalbaş's work with the sharpest social edge: İbrahim, who did his military service late, runs from every uniform, and that opens a black comedy laughing at the distance between the state and the ordinary citizen. Çatalbaş's Aydın is an ordinary man who runs a kiosk in Taksim and is questioned. The film's political and economic mockery, adapted from Ferhan Şensoy's own play, suits Çatalbaş's stage background very well, in my view.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Tayfun, the part that made Ali Çatalbaş known to a wide audience, comes back from Kolpaçino through Kolpaçino: Bomba to Kolpaçino 3. Devre, but the story is Şafak Sezer's every time. That critics were mostly negative about the third film shows, in my view, the limit of sequels that are content to repeat a side character: you know Tayfun, but nothing in the plot takes him anywhere new.
