Hande Ataizi — Biography

Hande Ataizi is an actress who has moved between cinema, television drama, theatre and presenting. She made her name with her first film, Mum Kokulu Kadınlar, in which she played Belkıs and won the Golden Orange for best actress. After a long break from the screen she returned in the Kanal D series Camdaki Kız, playing Cana Yalçın.

After studying at the conservatory she began working professionally on stage at the Kenter Theatre. Following her film debut she became known nationwide as the lead of the series Ruhsar, and she took part in many series, films and shows alongside Cem Davran, with whom she formed one of the industry's best-known pairings. In those years she appeared in Kahpe Bizans, Melekler Evi and Kara Duvak, and played the geography teacher Yıldız in Çılgın Dersane. As a presenter she was seen on İki Kere Kiki and Dest-i İzdivaç and sat on the jury of the contest Benzemez Kimse Sana. In recent years she has worked on projects such as Bihter and Taş Kağıt Makas.

The tabloid press has followed her closely, notably over being filmed while slipping away from photographers and over an incident in which she hit a reporter with an umbrella. Her first marriage, in 2004, lasted one day; she married the journalist Benjamin Harvey in 2012 and divorced him in 2018. They have a son.

Their work through different eyes

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Hande Ataizi's film work from the 1990s to 2000 sits at two extremes. Kahpe Bizans is a parody laughing at the kitsch historical melodramas of 1970s Yeşilçam; Mum Kokulu Kadınlar is an İrfan Tözüm film set in a Beşiktaş mansion of the 1940s, whose visual eroticism and score drew both praise and criticism. Her work with Ömer Kavur in Melekler Evi also shows, in my view, a separate line of cinema that television has left in its shadow.

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Hande Ataizi's television stretches twenty-four years between Gül Tanrıyar in Böyle mi Olacaktı and Cana Yalçın in Camdaki Kız, and both ends are family drama. What sits between them is Ruhsar, a fantasy comedy set in the afterlife beside an angel. In my view these three series show a screen career that keeps coming back to family drama and still opens out confidently into comedy.
