Wax-scented Women (Mum Kokulu Kadınlar)

Mum Kokulu Kadınlar ("Wax-scented Women") is a 1996 Turkish drama directed by İrfan Tözüm, who co-wrote the screenplay with Mete Özgencil. Halil Ergün and Hande Ataizi share the leading roles.

Spanning from the 1940s to the 1970s, the film follows İhsan, who grows up with his mother Firuzan and adopted sister Fatma before shutting himself away in the family mansion after tragically losing Natalie, the great love of his youth from his Robert College years. Decades later, after his mother's death leaves the family in ruins, Fatma's daughter Belkıs enters the story, and the isolated lives of several women in the same neighborhood come to intersect through the reclusive İhsan's counsel.

Praised and criticized in equal measure for its visual eroticism and its score, the film led to a broadcasting ban imposed by Turkey's RTÜK on the television channel that aired it. Despite winning awards, it also drew harsh criticism, and it remains remembered as one of the more controversial titles in Turkish film history.
