Halil Ergün — Biography

Halil İbrahim Ergün was born on 8 September 1946 in the village of Müşküle in the İznik district of Bursa. After finishing secondary school in İznik and Istanbul, he enrolled in the political science faculty at Ankara University but left before graduating to pursue the arts. He made his stage debut with the Halk Oyuncuları troupe in a production called Teneke, and in 1976 he co-founded a theater company in Ankara together with Vasıf Öngören, Mustafa Alabora and Erdoğan Akduman. His screen career opened in 1974 with a film scripted by Yılmaz Güney.

Over a career spanning more than sixty years he has taken on over eighty roles across theater, film and television, appearing in titles such as Yol, Hamam and Mum Kokulu Kadınlar, and reaching a wide audience as Ali Rıza Bey in the television series Yaprak Dökümü, which began in 2006. In 1995 he won a best actor prize at the Golden Orange festival for Böcek, followed by further honors at the Adana festival that year and the next, and in 2007 he received a lifetime achievement award from the Golden Orange festival. Beyond acting, he has also written for the screen.
