Mahir İpek — Biography

The son of folk poet Âşık İsmail İpek, Mahir İpek was born in Ankara in 1972 and works as a Turkish actor. He first took to the stage during his high school years through the Altındağ Municipality Theatre Courses, later working with the Anadolu Sanat Merkezi Children’s Theatre and the Gökkuşağı Players; after joining Ankara Sanat Tiyatrosu (AST) in 1991, he performed in numerous productions there through the 2018 season. He completed his acting training at Bilkent University’s Faculty of Music and Performing Arts, Department of Theatre.

Active in television and film since the early 2000s, İpek has appeared in productions including Kınalı Kar (2002), Rıza (2007), O... Çocukları (2008) and Av Mevsimi (2010), and reached wide audiences through his role as İkram in the Hükümet Kadın films and as Hayati in the sketch series BKM Güldür Güldür Show. He played the lead role of Salur Kazan in the 2017 film Dede Korkut Hikâyeleri: Salur Kazan - Zoraki Kahraman, and took on notable parts in Bir Baba Hindu (2016), Cici Babam (2018) and Okul Tıraşı (2021).

He was married to fellow performer Veda Yurtsever from 1998 to 2018.

Their work through different eyes

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Cici Babam and Kolonya Cumhuriyeti are light comedies to watch together: in one, grown siblings resist a new stepfather figure, in the other an alien lands in a small town. Mahir İpek is one face in a large cast in both. Av Mevsimi is a detective crime film, one for older viewers rather than small children.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

For Mahir İpek, who reached a wide audience through Hükümet Kadın and Güldür Güldür, the more interesting ground is the work outside comedy: the film noir of Münferit, the detective story of Av Mevsimi, the fairytale drama of Ulak. His real range shows there, in my view.
