Serkan Keskin — Biography

Serkan Keskin was born in İzmit on 25 November 1977 and took his first steps in acting in 1997 through a course run by the city theatre of İzmit, founded by Işıl Kasapoğlu, studying under teachers such as Barış Falay and Zühal Gencer. Between 1999 and 2002 he completed theatre training at Akademi İstanbul, also headed by Kasapoğlu, then joined the newly established Semaver Kumpanya in 2002, spending many years there as both a performer and a director. His screen career opened in 2004 with Yavuz Turgul's Gönül Yarası and Reha Erdem's Korkuyorum Anne, followed by a part in veteran director Zeki Ökten's Çinliler Geliyor and a role in the internationally awarded Sonbahar (2008). His 2011 turn as the character İsmail Abi on the TRT series Leyla ile Mecnun opened him to a mass audience, and the organization behind the İsmail Dümbüllü prize honoured him the following year, its 32nd edition; he also played bass in Leyla The Band, formed with that show's cast. Playing imam Selman Bulut for İtirazım Var got him voted best male lead at the 51st Golden Orange festival, while his part in Silsile brought the trophy for best actor in a supporting role at the Golden Boll awards. He played Balıkçı Sait in Onur Ünlü's series Beş Kardeş and took a part in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Ahlat Ağacı. In 2019 he founded the band Barabar, releasing the album Memleket Nere, and has since appeared in the series Mucize Doktor and Şahane Hayatım.

Their work through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

For a first look at Serkan Keskin, İsmail Abi in Leyla ile Mecnun is the right door: in my view it is the part where he sits most easily inside absurd comedy. Beş Kardeş, from the same director Onur Ünlü, makes a natural second stop. Behzat Ç.: Bir Ankara Polisiyesi is a harder, bleaker register, for anyone who wants to see Keskin outside comedy.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Onur Ünlü is the axis of Keskin's career: İtirazım Var, Sen Aydınlatırsın Geceyi, Leyla ile Mecnun, Beş Kardeş. Ünlü's odd, self-governing world gives him parts to build, while Ahlat Ağacı under Nuri Bilge Ceylan or Av Mevsimi under Yavuz Turgul shows that the same actor fits very different film languages. In an eight-hander like Tatlım Tatlım, in my view, that distinctiveness gets lost.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Keskin keeps being cast as an institution's man: the imam in İtirazım Var, the forensic doctor in Av Mevsimi, the psychologist in Hayat Şarkısı, a doctor in Jet Sosyete. In film these types carry a point of view, but in popular series like Jet Sosyete they shrink, in my view, to a title. The ordinary man who holds some authority is the social type that recurs in his work.
