Movie · 2017 · 16 people

On 13 October 2017 the Turkish action-crime film Cingöz Recai: Bir Efsanenin Dönüşü, directed by Onur Ünlü, was released. It is the third big-screen adaptation of the "kind-hearted thief" created by Peyami Safa and stars Kenan İmirzalıoğlu in the title role. About 655,000 people saw it and it took roughly 7.9 million lira. Limon produced it and Mars Entertainment Group distributed it.

The story follows Recai as he returns after years for a new heist. This time he works not with his own crew but by infiltrating a shadowy gang. Officially he plans to rob the home of a technology genius, yet moving from disguise to disguise and trick to trick he closes in on a real target nobody knows about. Ghost, whom he has sought for years with a personal grudge, is now close at hand, and his nemesis, Chief Inspector Mehmet Rıza, is on his trail again. Haluk Bilginer plays Mehmet Rıza, Meryem Uzerli plays Göze, Serkan Keskin plays Sadri and Musa Uzunlar plays Ghost, with Günay Karacaoğlu and Hakan Boyav also in the cast.

The screenplay is by Kerem Deren and Pınar Bulut, the producers were Hayri Aslan and Ali Akdeniz, with music by Hasan Özsüt.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

Cingöz Recai is back, and this time he infiltrates a gang, which is a pretty bold idea. The heist plan, the disguises, the chase after the Ghost: the pace is high and the story is always a step ahead. The cat-and-mouse game with Chief Inspector Mehmet Rıza adds life too. Haluk Bilginer's character is a fun opposing pole. In some stretches the plan gets too tangled and it is hard to follow what is going on, but this kind of film is partly watched for that. A fun crime action film.

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

The benevolent thief created by Peyami Safa is one of the beloved characters of our literature. This third screen adaptation feels like an old friend returning in new disguise. There is elegance in Kenan İmirzalıoğlu's Recai, and Haluk Bilginer's inspector is the strongest performance in the film. But the modern thriller tempo somewhat overshadows the character's distinctive air. A tech genius, a gang and a showdown seemed to me far from the old Recai's gentlemanliness. Still, it is nice to hear the name again.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

A third adaptation has to bring a perspective that refreshes the character, and Cingöz Recai only partly manages it. The transitions between the heist, disguise and revenge lines sometimes do not fit together, and because the real aim is kept secret, the viewer is left without direction for a while. A tech genius, a gang and a showdown are a familiar repertoire in crime films. The interplay between Kenan İmirzalıoğlu and Haluk Bilginer is what carries the film. The script tries to build many layers but cannot tie them in an easy flow. Enjoyable, but an adaptation that does not push its limits.
