Sarah Wayne Callies — Biography

Sarah Wayne Callies (born Sarah Anne Callies, 1 June 1977 in La Grange, Illinois) is an American actress, director and producer. She rose to fame as prison doctor Sara Tancredi in Fox's Prison Break and became known worldwide as Lori Grimes in AMC's The Walking Dead.

Born in Illinois, Callies grew up the daughter of two academics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa — her mother taught English literature and her father taught law. The family settled in Honolulu when she was only a year old. Her passion for performing developed through school theatre productions, and after finishing high school she attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, remaining active on stage throughout her undergraduate years. She went on to train at the National Theater Conservatory in Denver, completing a Master of Fine Arts in 2002.

Callies began her career on television in the early 2000s with roles in Tarzan and Queens Supreme, portraying Kate O'Malley in the latter. Her breakthrough arrived in 2005 with Prison Break, where she played Sara Tancredi opposite Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell, Robert Knepper and Amaury Nolasco. She reprised the part in the 2009 television film Prison Break: The Final Break and again in the series' fifth season in 2017.

In 2010 she joined the comic-book adaptation The Walking Dead, playing Lori Grimes during the show's first three seasons. She later starred as Katie Bowman in USA Network's Colony, as Robin Perry in NBC's Council of Dads and as Birdie Nicolletti in ABC's The Company You Keep, while also appearing in the miniseries The Long Road Home and Unspeakable.

On the big screen her credits include The Celestine Prophecy (2006), Whisper (2007), the oil-themed drama Black Gold (2011), Faces in the Crowd (2011), Foreverland (2011), Into the Storm (2014), Pay the Ghost (2015), The Other Side of the Door (2016) and This Is Your Death (2017). In 2010 she contributed voice work to The Twilight Zone Radio Dramas, and beyond acting she has taken on directing and producing work.

Callies is married to Josh Winterhalt, and the couple have a daughter named Keala.
