Sarah Wayne Callies was born in 1977 in La Grange, Illinois.
She completed her education at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.
While pursuing her undergraduate studies, she also received theatre training in the student groups Feminist Studies and Senior Fellowship in Indigenous Studies.
She earned her Master of Fine Arts degree while continuing her education at Denver's National Theater Conservatory.
She had her first acting experience with the character Kate O'Malley, whom she portrayed in the series Queens Supreme.
