Savaş Dinçel — Biography

Savaş Dinçel was an actor, cartoonist and director whose path ran from the City Theatres stage to one of Turkish television's best-loved father figures. Wide audiences knew him as the baker Nusret Baba in Ekmek Teknesi, and in cinema, thanks to his resemblance to İsmet İnönü, he became the go-to actor for that role. When he died in 2007 he left behind some sixty productions, plays he had written and cartoon albums.

While studying at the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory he drew cartoons as an amateur, and from 1962 he performed with the City Theatres. The 1980 coup removed him from that institution; together with Müjdat Gezen he was tried over Çizgilerle Nâzım Hikmet, written by Gezen and illustrated by Dinçel, and was acquitted. In those years he became known for the "Tonton" strips in the newspaper Günaydın, and he returned to his profession through a Council of State ruling. On screen he played İnönü in Kurtuluş and Cumhuriyet, Berber Ali in Ağır Roman, Hacı in Dar Alanda Kısa Paslaşmalar and Sacit in Eve Dönüş; Bizimkiler was another key television credit.

Dar Alanda Kısa Paslaşmalar earned him best actor awards from SİYAD, the Istanbul Film Festival and ÇASOD. The Savaş Dinçel Theatre Awards, founded in his name after his death, are presented each year around 1 April at Baba Sahne; the seventeenth edition was held in 2026.
