Savaş Dinçel — Biography

Halil Savaş Dinçel was born on 1 April 1942 in Istanbul's Fatih district; he trained as an actor at the theatre department of the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory and made his stage debut with the Istanbul City Theatres. After the 1980 military coup he was removed from his theatre post; he and Müjdat Gezen were also prosecuted for communist propaganda over the comic book Çizgilerle Nâzım Hikmet, which Gezen wrote and Dinçel illustrated, facing up to 21 years in prison before being acquitted.

Over a career of more than four decades he appeared in nearly sixty productions, playing Haydar in Homoti (1987), the barber Ali in Ağır Roman (1997), İsmet İnönü in Cumhuriyet (1998), and Sacit in Eve Dönüş (2006). His role as Hacı in Dar Alanda Kısa Paslaşmalar (2000) won him Best Actor at three separate festivals. On television he became widely known as "Nusret Baba" in Ekmek Teknesi and for the long-running Bizimkiler. He died on 20 December 2007 of cardiac arrest following internal bleeding at his home. The Savaş Dinçel Theatre Awards, founded in his memory, are presented each year around his 1 April birthday at Baba Sahne; the seventeenth edition was held in 2026.
