Serdar Gökhan — Biography

Serdar Gökhan is an actor, also known as a painter, whose career runs from the golden age of Yeşilçam to today's historical television dramas. His real name is Nusret Ersöz. Newer audiences know him best as Süleyman Şah in Diriliş: Ertuğrul.

Born in Mudurnu, in Bolu province, he studied in the painting department of the Beşiktaş-based Tatbiki Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi and worked for a time as a comic-strip illustrator. He entered cinema in 1964 with small parts and became a sought-after name thanks to his athletic look and his acting. His first lead was Kadırgalı Ali; he went on to appear in adventure, action and drama productions such as Irmak (as Nuri), Malkoçoğlu Kurt Bey (1972, Doğan Bey), Yatık Emine (1974), Travelers of Destiny (1975, Oruç), Acı Severim Tatlı Döverim (1975), Kan Kardeşler (Ali) and Av (1989, Yusuf Bozdağlı).

From the 1990s he was seen more often on television: the Kurdoğlu series, Karaoğlan (2002, Baybora), Fatmagül'ün Suçu Ne? and Kurt Seyit ve Şura (2014), then Diriliş: Ertuğrul, followed by Kuruluş: Osman, Türkler Geliyor: Adaletin Kılıcı (Konuralp) and Mehmed: Fetihler Sultanı (2024, Ali Bey Evrenosoğlu). With a career of more than sixty years, he is one of the names linking classic Turkish cinema with current television drama.

Their work through different eyes

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Serdar Gökhan's recent work gathers in historical epics: Süleyman Şah in Diriliş Ertuğrul, Evrenosoğlu Ali Bey in Mehmed: Fetihler Sultanı, Konuralp in Türkler Geliyor: Adaletin Kılıcı. All are men of standing in the early Turkish and Ottoman world. In my view that brings Gökhan both continuity and a limit: viewers know him as the authoritative face of history, but as the mould repeats, other work such as Mirza Bey in Kurt Seyit ve Şura is left in the shade.

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

Looking at Serdar Gökhan's Yeşilçam years is a good idea for anyone who knows him only from historical series. He played Hastabakıcı Server in Yatık Emine, Ömer Kavur's first feature, and Nuri in Ömer Lütfi Akad's Irmak; Affedilmeyen is a black-and-white melodrama from 1966. In my view these films point to a cinema past that reaches beyond today's epic parts, in films by serious directors.
