Yılmaz Köksal — Biography

Yılmaz Köksal was one of the sought-after faces of Yeşilçam's adventure films in the 1960s and 70s. He rose from extra and supporting parts to leading roles, appeared in well over a hundred productions across a career of almost fifty years, and later turned to television series. He also wrote screenplays. He died in Istanbul in 2015.

He was born in Kırşehir, the son of a police officer, and was the brother of the press illustrator and comic-strip artist Yücel Köksal. After primary school he came to Istanbul and studied at the Tophane Sanat Enstitüsü, then worked on ships and travelled around Europe. In the late 1950s he appeared at the Dormen Theatre in the play Kamp 17. He entered cinema in 1965 with Tunç Başaran's adaptation of Orhan Kemal's Murtaza. For a long time he stayed in second-rank roles; his breakthrough came in 1970 with Çetin İnanç's Çeko, which made him a sought-after adventure actor. Malkoçoğlu (1966), Malkoçoğlu Krallara Karşı (1967), Zagor and Üç Süpermen Olimpiyatlarda belong to this period, while Aybiçe Kurt Kız is counted among the cult films.

As private television channels multiplied he moved into series, playing Yılmaz Usta for a long stretch in Kaygısızlar. In 2009 he revived the character of Commissioner Çeko in Yahşi Batı.
