Börü 2039

TV Series · 2021–2022 · 9 people

Action, thriller and drama blend with science fiction in Börü 2039, a Turkish web series. It was made jointly by Alper Çağlar's CaglarArts and Doruk Acar's Insignia studios. Can Emre and Ahmet Atalay share the direction; Atalay is also known for a short action film titled The Cure. The series was announced with a trailer released by the producer on January 17, 2021, a first teaser followed on November 25, 2021, and it began on BluTV on December 28, 2021. It lasted a single season of six episodes and finished on March 10, 2022.

The story continues the Börü series and film released in 2018 and is set 25 years after that first story, in a dystopian 2039. Alliances have worn thin, the global order has been shaken and the world stands on the brink of total war, while dangerous technologies beyond humanity's control strain the social fabric. The series follows a run of political and social events in Turkey and across the world and what comes after them, looking at security and war from a near-future vantage point. The name Börü means wolf.

The cast includes Murat Arkın, Emir Benderlioğlu, Cansel Elçin, Doğan Bayraktar, Ahu Türkpençe, Deniz Uğur, Merih Öztürk and Robert Maaser.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

One season, six episodes: Börü 2039 is a short run, and that cuts both ways. There is no sagging middle to worry about, but the story ends just as you start getting used to the characters. Jumping 25 years past the 2018 Börü will intrigue returning viewers, while newcomers who missed the first story may find this dystopian world hard to settle into. The cast, with Murat Arkın, Emir Benderlioğlu and Cansel Elçin, has real weight. The wide-ranging story of political and social upheaval feels a little squeezed into six episodes; another season would have let the characters settle in much better.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

The near future, a world on the brink of total war and technology out of control: on paper, exactly my kind of thing. Mixing action, thriller and science fiction is an ambitious idea, and the six-episode format barely gives the pace a chance to drop. Co-director Ahmet Atalay being known for an action short raises expectations. A good pick if you want a fast series built around security and war.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Börü 2039 heads somewhere Turkish series rarely go, into dystopian science fiction, and that boldness deserves credit. But in trying to carry action, thriller, drama and sci-fi layers all at once, the show struggles to find a clear voice among its genres. Big themes such as a shaken global order, fraying alliances and technology slipping out of control can only stay on the surface in a six-episode season. Splitting the direction between Can Emre and Ahmet Atalay raises questions about the unity of the storytelling. The idea of looking at security from a near-future vantage point is the show's most original trait, and it deserved more room.
