Solas

Movie · 1999–2001 · 3 people

Solas (released in English as Alone) is a 1999 Spanish drama written and directed by Andalusian filmmaker Benito Zambrano in his feature debut. It follows Rosa, who spends a short time at her daughter María's home while her husband is in hospital. María scrapes by on temporary jobs and is pregnant by a man who does not love her, finding solace only in drink; her mother's patient, affectionate presence gradually softens her hardened heart and rekindles hope in their lonely neighbour as well.

The title reflects that both women are alone, each in her own way. The film won the Audience Award in the Panorama section at the 1999 Berlinale and went on to take five Goya awards in 2000.
