Takva: A Man's Fear of God (Takva)
Takva is a 2006 Turkish-German co-production drama directed by Özer Kızıltan and written by Önder Çakar. Produced by Yeni Sinemacılar together with the German company Corazón International, the roughly 96-minute film opened in Turkey on 1 December 2006 and explores a pious way of life rarely addressed in Turkish cinema, without propaganda or caricature.
The story follows Muharrem, a deeply devout man whose modest, prayer-centered life earns him a reputation for trustworthiness. This catches the eye of the wealthy sheikh of his religious order, who assigns him to collect rents from the order's many properties. Thrust into the worldly existence he had long avoided, Muharrem finds his values slowly shaken by the turmoil of modern life. Starring Erkan Can, Meray Ülgen, Güven Kıraç, Erman Saban, Settar Tanrıöğen, Engin Günaydın and Murat Cemcir, the film was Turkey's submission for the 80th Academy Awards but was not nominated.
