The Swimmers (Yüzücüler)

The Swimmers is a 2022 drama directed by Sally El Hosaini, who shares screenplay credit with Jack Thorne. Rooted in the real experiences of two sisters fleeing the conflict in Syria, the story follows their dangerous escape toward Europe and, eventually, one sibling's path to competing at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro as a swimmer. The script draws on the memoir written by athlete Yusra Mardini. Real-life siblings Nathalie Issa and Manal Issa take the lead roles, joined by Ahmed Malek, Matthias Schweighöfer and Ali Suliman among others. After debuting at the Toronto festival in 2022, the picture had a brief theatrical run before streaming worldwide on Netflix, where it landed among the most-watched titles in dozens of countries. It earned a BAFTA nomination for Outstanding British Film in 2023.
