Ahmet Mekin — Biography

Ahmet Mekin, born Ahmet Kurteli on 6 August 1932 in Istanbul to an Albanian father and a mother descended from Hungarian nobility who had settled in Ottoman lands, began his career on stage at the Bakırköy People's House before entering film in 1957 with Mahşere Kadar. Over more than six decades he appeared in close to 200 productions, becoming one of Yeşilçam's most recognizable character actors.

Working with directors such as Osman F. Seden, Halit Refiğ and Lütfi Ö. Akad, he is best remembered for playing Cemşit in Atıf Yılmaz's Selvi Boylum Al Yazmalım; he periodically returned to theatre, appearing in a 1969 play and a 1972 Dostlar Tiyatrosu staging of a comic-strip adaptation. From the 1980s he shifted increasingly toward television, remained active on screen well into the 2010s, and received several lifetime-achievement honors over his career.

Still in the public eye past the age of ninety-three, Mekin published a memoir in late 2025, shared a film set with his actor grandson Mekin Sezer in mid-2026, and, in June 2026, offered an emotional public tribute to his late colleague Kadir İnanır.
