Nurseli İdiz — Biography

Nurseli İdiz is an award-winning actress whose career runs from the theatre stage into film and television. Wide audiences know her as Süreyya in the series Kınalı Kar, which also found an audience in the Arab world in dubbed form. She is part of the Tiyatro İstanbul company and continues to work on stage and screen.

Her first phase was the stage. At Pendik High School she won best actress at a school theatre contest for a two-minute part; she studied theatre at the Ankara State Conservatory, took a degree in archaeology and art history at Hacettepe, and began her professional life in 1981 at the Ankara Sanat Tiyatrosu. She then worked at the Ankara and Istanbul State Theatres, the City Theatres and Tiyatro İstanbul. Her film debut came in 1987 with Gece Yolculuğu, followed by Çözülmeler, Kahpe Bizans, Şarkıcı, Mumya Firarda and Güneşi Gördüm. From the 2000s she appeared in series such as Şöhret, Ömre Bedel, Zehirli Sarmaşık, Harem, Yalan Dünya, İlişki Durumu: Karışık and Hıçkırık, and in the films Yol Arkadaşım and Allah Yazdıysa Bozsun.

Her honours include best actress awards from the Turkish Film Writers Association and the Ankara International Film Festival for Çözülmeler, a Magazine Journalists Association award for Kahpe Bizans, and the Sadri Alışık award for best supporting actress for Şarkıcı.

Their work through different eyes

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

The most familiar type in Nurseli İdiz's roles is the woman at the head of an institution or household: Müdire Hülya Hanım in Güneşi Gördüm, the Mozaikli Valide Sultan in Harem. Güneşi Gördüm is the story of a Kurdish family forced out of its village, and İdiz's headmistress carries the woman's face of the state and the institution in it. In my view the type gives İdiz weight, but meeting the same tone of authority again elsewhere makes the parts resemble one another.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Nurseli İdiz's Süreyya in Kınalı Kar lives in the melodramatic world of village love stories, while her Helena in Kahpe Bizans sits in a parody of the kitsch historical dramas of 1970s Yeşilçam. These two poles are, in my view, the most productive way into her work: an actor who can stay straight both inside melodrama and inside a film that mocks it knows how to set the tone. Parody asks more care than serious drama, because the actor draws the line of exaggeration.
