CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

TV Series · 2000–2015 · 6 people

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (known in Turkey as Kanıt Peşinde) is an American crime procedural created by Anthony E. Zuiker. It ran on CBS from October 6, 2000, to September 27, 2015, for 15 seasons. The series follows forensic scientists in the Las Vegas police crime lab as they uncover the truth behind mysterious and unusual killings. A single episode usually works through one to three separate cases. In Turkey it was shown on TRT as Kanıt Peşinde.

At the center of the cast was William Petersen as team supervisor Gil Grissom. Marg Helgenberger, Gary Dourdan, George Eads, Jorja Fox and Paul Guilfoyle shared the leads, and Eric Szmanda, Robert David Hall, Louise Lombard and Wallace Langham joined the ensemble. Petersen left midway through season nine and Laurence Fishburne took his place; from season twelve Ted Danson led the team. In 2002-03 the show topped the US ratings with an average of 26 million viewers.

Jerry Bruckheimer produced, and filming took place mostly in Los Angeles. The success brought six Primetime Emmys and spawned CSI: Miami, CSI: NY and CSI: Cyber. Police and prosecutors argued that real investigations were portrayed inaccurately. The series closed with the two-hour Immortality finale, and a sequel, CSI: Vegas, began in 2021.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

A crime show that lasts fifteen seasons is rare, and I think the secret of CSI is the clarity of its formula. One to three cases an episode, a mystery cracked step by step in the lab: wherever you jump in, you won't get lost. The real flavour, though, comes from William Petersen's Gil Grissom and the team's chemistry. When Petersen leaves midway through season nine, something goes missing; the show carries on with Laurence Fishburne and then Ted Danson, but the spark of the early seasons never quite returns. If you're planning a long binge, the early seasons are the strongest stretch.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

This show builds tension with a microscope rather than a gun, and surprisingly it works. Strange murders, evidence surfacing piece by piece in the lab: it's hard to get up before the episode ends. But when the same pattern repeats season after season, at some point you catch yourself thinking 'another lab-analysis scene?'. Skip a few episodes and you still miss nothing, which is both a plus and a minus.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

It's a crime show, and what you see on screen is murders and bodies. The lab scenes and talk about causes of death can be too heavy for small children. Best kept for the teenagers, after the little ones are in bed. For high-schoolers it may spark an interest in science, but it's worth telling them that, as police and prosecutors themselves objected, real investigations don't work this way.
