Lola + Bilidikid

Lola + Bilidikid (German: Lola und Bilidikid) is a 1999 German film written and directed by Kutluğ Ataman. Set in Berlin, it was shot in German and Turkish and is classified as a drama, a romantic film and a production with LGBT themes.

The story revolves around 17-year-old Murat, who lives with his family in Berlin. After their father's death his older brother Osman, who has become the head of the household, puts pressure on him, while Murat tries to cope with questions about his sexual identity and with violence from his peers at school. Leaving home, Murat meets Lola, who performs dressed as a woman, and her lover Bilidikid; this encounter brings to light truths he did not know about his family and about himself. The film deals with the exclusion directed at homosexuality within the Turkish community in Berlin, with domestic violence and with the search for identity.

Ataman initially wanted to shoot the film in Istanbul, but as he could not find support, filming took place entirely in Berlin. Martin Hagemann served as producer and Arpad Bondy composed the music. The leading roles are played by Gandi Mukli, Baki Davrak, Erdal Yıldız and Hasan Ali Mete; the cast also includes Murat Yılmaz, Michael Gerber and Inge Keller. The film was first released in Germany in 1999 and was afterwards shown in many countries, including Turkey. It won awards at various film festivals in 1999 and 2000.
