Lonesome Dove

Lonesome Dove is a four-part American Western miniseries from 1989, directed by Simon Wincer and adapted by William D. Wittliff from Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. It stands as the first entry in the wider Lonesome Dove saga.

The story follows Gus McRae and Woodrow Call, two retired Texas Rangers passing their days quietly in the small town of Lonesome Dove. When an old friend named Jake arrives with tales of rich cattle country in Montana, Call persuades Gus and a band of townspeople to join a hazardous drive north. Gus, however, harbors a private hope: reuniting with a former sweetheart now living in Nebraska. What begins as a cattle run gradually grows into an epic undertaking that reshapes the lives of everyone involved.

Headlined by Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Danny Glover, Diane Lane, and Anjelica Huston, the series aired on CBS from February 5 to 8, 1989, drawing an estimated 26 million homes. It earned 18 Emmy nominations with seven wins, including directing honors for Wincer, and collected two Golden Globes, helping revive both the miniseries format and the television Western.
