Zafer Algöz — Biography

Zafer Algöz was born on 30 August 1961 in Kars, a grandson of the composer Kemani Haydar Telhüner. His father's job took the family to Trabzon in 1966, where he attended primary school. He took his first theatre classes through a 1975 youth program run by Bursa State Theatre, entered the theatre department of Ankara State Conservatory in 1981, and, upon graduating in 1985, began his stage career at Bursa State Theatre. He transferred to Istanbul State Theatres in 1989, spending many years there in productions of Hamlet, Macbeth and Amadeus among others, and won best comedy actor at the 2010 Lions Theatre Awards for his role in God of Carnage. In film he became known through late-1990s titles such as Ağır Roman, Salkım Hanımın Taneleri and Duruşma, and reached a much wider audience playing Yalçın Yıldız in the series Kurtlar Vadisi Pusu. He went on to appear in comedies including A.R.O.G, Yahşi Batı, Uzun Hikaye, Kaçma Birader, Salur Kazan: Zoraki Kahraman, Arif V 216, Görevimiz Tatil and Karakomik Filmler, winning best actor at the 2017 Sadri Alışık Awards for Kaçma Birader, and also appeared in the series İntikam and Tutunamayanlar. A well-known supporter of Beşiktaş, he has produced content on YouTube with fellow actor Can Yılmaz since 2019 and continues to perform on stage.

Their work through different eyes

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Kaçma Birader suits the whole family: a chase-and-laughs adventure of an odd Yozgat family in Istanbul, with Zafer Algöz leading the cast as Muammer. Kurtlar Vadisi Pusu and Behzat Ç. Bir Ankara Polisiyesi are harsh series, so keep them for older viewers.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Zafer Algöz's work with Cem Yılmaz is the defining line of his filmography: Ahben Sonel in Pek Yakında, Besim Toker in Arif V 216, Karga, Kumo and Doktor in A.R.O.G. In Yılmaz's parody cinema, supporting parts that welcome exaggeration give Algöz room to show his comic rhythm. In my view this collaboration is where he shines most.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

Zafer Algöz's action side mostly consists of parts that stand around a hero. Kurtlar Vadisi Pusu is a large cast revolving around Polat Alemdar, and Yalçın Yıldız is one part of that crowd. In my view this is enough to see Algöz in a fast-moving world, but the comedy films are where he comes forward.
