Muharrem Gürses — Biography
Muharrem Gürses was born on August 15, 1913, in the Merzifon district of Amasya. Drawn to theater from a young age, he began performing with amateur troupes at 17 and joined a city theater company in 1931; he also trained in painting and worked for a time as a teacher in Samsun.
Turning to cinema from the 1940s onward, Gürses built a career spanning more than fifty years as an actor, screenwriter, director, and producer. He appeared in historical films such as Barbaros Hayreddin Paşa (1951) and Köroğlu (1968), and later took part in the 1979 television series Yorgun Savaşçı. He is best remembered in Turkish film history for playing the stingy school principal in Hababam Sınıfı, a character forever trying to squeeze money out of his students. The father of comedian Atilla Arcan, he passed away in Istanbul on April 7, 1999.
