Bergen

Bergen is a biographical drama that dramatizes the life of the singer Bergen, remembered as one of arabesque music's most anguished voices. It was co-directed by Caner Alper and Mehmet Binay from a screenplay by Sema Kaygusuz and Yıldız Bayazıt. Farah Zeynep Abdullah plays the lead, portraying the singer's turbulent life and the killing that made her a symbol associated with violence against women in Turkey. The man who killed her, played on screen by Erdal Beşikçioğlu, is never named within the film itself. Released on March 4, 2022, the film was pulled from theaters shortly afterward in the Adana district where the killer was from; the mayor there at the time said the withdrawal was due to the picture's violent content. The film drew wide attention for confronting a painful chapter of Turkish public memory.
