Ask Your Heart (Yüreğine Sor)
Yüreğine Sor is a 2009 Turkish drama that Yusuf Kurçenli both directed and wrote. The project drew on "Son Krifos," a book by TRT producer Turgay Bostan, and was shot in the village of Şenyuva in Rize's Çamlıhemşin district.
Set in a Black Sea village in the closing years of the 1800s, the story follows a forbidden romance between Esma and Mustafa. Mustafa appears to be Muslim but is secretly practicing Christianity; once Ottoman reforms extend equal rights to non-Muslim subjects, the church pressures those hiding their faith to come forward, leaving Mustafa torn between conscience and feeling. A local landowner's son, Mehmet, who is smitten with Esma, adds a further obstacle for the couple.
Tuba Büyüküstün and Kenan Ece take the lead roles, with Hakan Eratik, Yeşim Ceren Bozoğlu, Taner Barlas and Nihat İleri also appearing. The film explores how the social and religious pressures of the period cast a shadow over personal emotion.
