To Want to Fly

Volere volare (To Want to Fly) is a 1991 Italian comedy co-written and co-directed by Maurizio Nichetti and Guido Manuli, blending live action with animation. Nichetti also stars as a man who earns his living dubbing sound effects for cartoons. His life takes a bizarre turn when he realizes that he himself is gradually transforming into a cartoon character. Just before the change becomes complete, he crosses paths with a woman who has a highly unusual profession and falls in love with her. The ongoing metamorphosis throws both his private life and his career into chaos, forcing him to juggle romance with the everyday absurdities of a body that no longer obeys the rules of the real world. Produced by the Cecchi Gori Group, the film mixes slapstick and fantasy as it plays with the boundary between the drawn world and reality.
