The hopeless ones (Umutsuzlar) (translated)

Umutsuzlar is a 1971 Turkish film written and directed by Yılmaz Güney, who also takes the lead role opposite Filiz Akın. It brought the two stars back together for the first time since Prisoners Without Shackles (1964), and they never shared the screen again afterwards. The picture also marked Hikmet Taşdemir's first appearance in cinema.

The story centres on Fırat, a well-known Istanbul tough guy, and Çiğdem, a ballerina, who fall deeply in love. Fırat's violent way of life keeps them from staying together, and unable to bear the separation, he tries to carve out moments alone with her. Meanwhile, a rival known as Tahta Bacak, who covets Fırat's position, is determined to eliminate him. Alongside Güney and Akın, the cast includes Hayati Hamzaoğlu.
