The Enemy (Düşman)

Düşman (released internationally as The Enemy) is a 1979 Turkish drama co-directed by Zeki Ökten and Yılmaz Güney, who wrote the screenplay during his second imprisonment. It follows İsmail (Aytaç Arman), an unemployed man forced into day-labor markets, as his household unravels and his wife plans to leave; Kâmil Sönmez also appears in the cast.

Turkish censors banned the film's domestic screening on the grounds that it disturbed public order. Internationally, it competed for the Golden Bear at the 1980 Berlin International Film Festival and received a jury award there; it was also later recognized, among the belated prizes of the cancelled 17th Antalya Film Festival, with Best Director for Zeki Ökten and Best Actor for Aytaç Arman.
