Ahmet Kostarika — Biography

Ahmet Kostarika, whose real name was Ahmet Turgutlu, was a supporting actor seen in a great many Yeşilçam productions. He played in hundreds of films, most of them small but memorable character parts. His name appeared as "Ahmet Kostarika" in the great majority of his films, and the nickname "Kostarika Ahmet" eventually replaced his real name.

Born and raised in Sarıyer, Istanbul, with family roots in Kastamonu, Kostarika ran a tavern before acting: he ran Kostarika Meyhanesi in Sarıyer and was discovered by Lütfi Ömer Akad. His first film was İpsala Cinayeti, made in 1952, and he remained in front of the camera until the early 1990s. He played grocers, greengrocers, butchers, policemen, cooks, servants and, now and then, villains: a servant in Efkârlıyım Abiler, a cook in Ne Umduk Ne Bulduk, a butcher in Dönme Dolap and Homoti. Alongside films such as Köroğlu (1968), Gönül Hırsızı (1971) and Yunus Emre (1986), he also appeared in productions starring Kemal Sunal.

On television he appeared in the series Perihan Abla and Kuruluş: Osmancık. Oğlum ve Ben (1993) was among his last films. He died in Istanbul in June 1994, and is remembered as one of Yeşilçam's veterans.

Their work through different eyes

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

To get to know Ahmet Kostarika, look at the restaurateur in Çıplak Vatandaş and the bus attendant in Ertem Eğilmez's Köyden İndim Şehire: tiny parts, yet they show how he gave life to the neighbourhood crowd of Yeşilçam. His place as the driver in Ömer Kavur's 1981 Ah Güzel İstanbul is a reminder that he was not only at home in comedy.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Tradesmen line up in Kostarika's films: the baker in Tokatçı, the market seller in Yalancı Yarim, the watchman in the 1966 Ah Güzel İstanbul. In my view their sum draws the small urban people of Yeşilçam, the butcher, the grocer and the watchman who make up the neighbourhood order. Here is also the limit: the type stays the same, and apart from the occasional villain he rarely leaves this frame.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Of the films with Ahmet Kostarika, Tokatçı and Köyden İndim Şehire suit the family table as comedies. Gerzek Şaban has gangsters, casinos and fights, so watch it with older children rather than small ones. Yatık Emine and the 1981 Ah Güzel İstanbul are adult dramas.
