Summer Book (Tatil Kitabı)

Tatil Kitabı (released internationally as Summer Book) is the 2008 debut feature of writer-director Seyfi Teoman. The 92-minute drama follows a merchant family from Silifke over the course of a summer, told largely through the eyes of Ali, the family's shy, withdrawn younger son.

Tension builds as the strict-tempered father, Mustafa, refuses to let his older son Veysel — a military-school student — leave to sit university entrance exams, while pressuring Ali to spend the summer learning the family trade instead; friction with his wife Güler and his brother Hasan runs alongside this central conflict. A cerebral hemorrhage that leaves Mustafa in a coma after a business trip shifts the balance within the household. The cast includes Taner Birsel and Rıza Akın.

Following acclaim for his 2004 short film Apartman, Teoman made this first feature with backing from the Hubert Bals Fund of the Rotterdam Film Festival; it premiered in the Forum section of the Berlin Film Festival and went on to win the Best Turkish Film award at the 27th Istanbul International Film Festival.
