Muzaffer Tema — Biography

Muzaffer Tema is remembered as one of the first romantic leading men of Yeşilçam, and later as a character actor who also worked as a producer and director. His screen career ran from 1949 into the mid-1980s, and he is described as the first Turkish actor to appear in a Hollywood film.

He came to cinema through music. At his father's wish he studied flute, violin and piano at the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory, then worked at the Ankara State Conservatory and the Presidential Symphony Orchestra. A 1948 concert at the Tepebaşı casino caught the eye of filmmakers, and he made his debut in Çığlık (1949). His European looks soon made him a sought-after name, and in 1951 he was voted best actor in a film magazine's readers' contest. Kanun Namına (1952) and Hıçkırık (1953) belong to this period. He started producing with Dişi Yılan in 1956 and wrote and directed Vahşi Kedi (1961).

In the mid-1950s he went to the United States to try his luck, appearing in A Certain Smile and Twelve to the Moon, and came back after two and a half years because of his father's illness. In later decades he worked mostly as a character actor in films such as Özleyiş, Canım Sana Feda, Dünyanın En Güzel Kadını, Yılmayan Şeytan and Vazife Uğruna. He chaired the Turkish-American Association in Dallas for two years. He died in Çeşme in 2011, aged 92.
