Among Family (Aile Arasında)

Movie · 2017 · 15 people

BKM Film's Turkish comedy Aile Arasında ("Among Family") reached cinemas on 1 December 2017. Ozan Açıktan directed from a screenplay by Gülse Birsel, and the film runs 126 minutes. It did well at the box office, drawing about 5.3 million viewers and roughly 65.6 million lira. A sequel has been announced for 2026.

The story opens with Fikret (Engin Günaydın), whose wife of twenty-one years walks out on him without warning. By a comic coincidence he meets Solmaz (Demet Evgar), a music-hall singer dropped by her musician partner, and the two become friends. Then Solmaz's daughter Zeynep (Su Kutlu) receives a marriage proposal from Emirhan (Fatih Artman), a boyfriend from Adana she has lied to about her family. Solmaz asks Fikret, an anxious, neurotic man who cannot lie, to play the girl's dignified police-chief father through the wedding. But the groom's traditional family is planning elaborate ceremonies, and Fikret must act the role of his life before a tough, armed Adana clan that owns a kebab chain. Erdal Özyağcılar (Haşmet Kurt), Devrim Yakut (Mükerrem Kurt), Şevket Çoruh (Necdet Balcılar), Ayta Sözeri (Behiye) and Gülse Birsel (Mihriban) round out the cast.

Necati Akpınar, Şebnem Kitiş Vural and Tunay Vural produced, and Mars Entertainment Group distributed.

Through different eyes

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Aile Arasında is a comedy the whole family can laugh at together. Fikret stepping into the role of a fake father and the wedding preparations are great fun. The humour comes mostly from misunderstandings and lies that keep growing. The groom's family is shown as armed and hot-tempered, though always in a comic spirit; it's still worth telling little ones it's all a joke. At about two hours it runs a little long, and the youngest may get restless. Grandparents and teens alike will enjoy it side by side.

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

Aile Arasında feels like a present-day take on the old-fashioned comedy of misunderstandings. A man who simply can't lie forced to play the role of his life is a premise we know from Yeşilçam's beloved comedies. The rapport between Engin Günaydın and Demet Evgar is the film's warmest asset, with Erdal Özyağcılar and Devrim Yakut in strong support. The jokes from Gülse Birsel's pen mostly land. Only, a running time of over two hours is too much for so simple a premise; the old comedies would have finished the job shorter and sweeter.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Aile Arasında is a comedy, but underneath lies the idea that a marriage is a matter between two families, not just two people. A daughter lying to her fiancé about her family, the need for a respectable father figure and the groom's traditional family planning elaborate ceremonies show with humour how much status and appearances count. The meeting of a mother from the music-hall world and a traditional family from Adana turns the gap between ways of life into comedy. Yet the film turns this tension into gags rather than questioning it, and the armed groom's family with its chain of kebab restaurants rarely gets beyond familiar provincial stereotypes.
